🐝 Meet the Irish Honey Bee
At Rathattin Cottage Farm, we’re proud to keep native Irish honey bees—a special type of bee called Apis mellifera mellifera. These bees have lived in Ireland for thousands of years and are perfectly suited to our cool, damp climate.
Why Irish Honey Bees Matter
Irish honey bees are a vital part of our natural world. They help pollinate wild plants, garden flowers, and crops. By keeping native bees, we’re also protecting Ireland’s biodiversity and helping to preserve a unique and important species.
What Makes Them Special?
- They’re tough: These bees thrive in Irish weather, even when it’s wet and windy.
- They’re calm: Native bees tend to be gentle and easy to work with.
- They’re efficient: They know the Irish landscape well and are great at finding nectar from local plants.
- They make delicious honey: Their honey is rich, complex, and full of local flavour.
Support Local Bees
By choosing honey from native Irish bees, you’re supporting sustainable beekeeping, local biodiversity, and the protection of a beautiful Irish species. Our honey is a true taste of County Wicklow—made by bees who belong here.
Thank you for supporting Irish bees. Every jar of honey helps.
